Object of Rotary Service Above Self The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and in particular, to encourage and foster: - The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
- High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
- The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business, and community life.
- The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The Four-Way Test Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all Involved? Club 2007 International Project Fresh water project in the village of La Estanzuela, Honduras. Tthe Century City Rotary Club was impressed and inspired in 2006 when visiting students from the USC chapter of Engineers Without Borders came to visit and make a presentation on their most recent project in Honduras. The engineering students had travelled to La Estanzuela in March of 2006. They told the story of how children in this little farming village could not go to school, because they had a job to do each day of going to a stream some distance away and carrying jugs of water back to the village. The water in the stream was contaminated but the engineering students paid for the purchase of individual clay water filters for each family to use to make the water sanitary. To free the children of the village from the burden of having to bring the water to the village, and allowing them to go to school, a water pump was designed by the engineering students. The least expensive and closest place to buy the pump is Brazil, and its cost is $18,000. The engineering students have been raising money and have volunteered their services, but they needed more money to pay for the pump. Once the pump is installed they feel they can teach the villagers how to maintain it. When current club president, Shahram Hazany, was attending PETS (President Elect Training Seminar) in the spring of 2007, "Clean Water in Third World Countries" was one of the themes presented to him by Rotary International leaders. He thought about the plight of the people of La Estanzuela, and decided he would make the completion of this water project in Honduras the International project for his club for the 2007-2008 Rotary year. The Century City club is partnering with a Rotary Club in Honduras so that the project can qualify for Rotary Foundation matching grants. We are also in the process of finding other small Rotary clubs in the Los Angeles district to join in the fund raising effort.
