Over the course of 2008, we have received donations of youth books given to various members of our club. Jim Sharvin the Literacy Chair and incoming President encouraged the members to obtain as many books as possible. Past President Gloria Herrera had the great opportunity to receive a donation from one of her neighbors. She received 700 books called Kitty in the City which is a wonderful children's book about Mind your Manners with great illustrations.
Gloria contacted Father Greg Boyle from Homeboy Industries and asked them if they could utilize youth books. They were so happy to get this opportunity as they will be giving them out to the children at Christmas. In addition, our club adopted Fire Station Unit 62 this past year and Gloria received an invitation to join Unit 62 for a holiday breakfast on December 7th which would be in conjunction with Toys for Tots. We will be donating a number of books for Toys for Tots at Unit 62.
In addition, Rocky Delgadillo created a program with a few school districts called the Logo Project. Our Rotaract Member Andrea Swartz will be participating in working on this project and informed our club that donating books would also be appreciated. Therefore, we will be donating to this organization as well.
And so we record another year in which our club has continued to support the Rotary International theme of Literacy! We look forward to continuing this effort for years to come.
